What a Blast (off) in Houston!
It has been about five years since I last attended a full AAPA Conference, and AAPA 2024 in Houston did not disappoint. There were a few challenges, such as the tornado that displaced one million Houstonians the day before the conference began, leading to some lodging issues for a few attendees, myself included. However, the weather cleared, and the conference proceeded as planned. Let me share my experience.
As usual, thousands of PAs converged in a single location—this time, Houston, Texas—to celebrate our profession, learn, and network. I was delighted to reconnect with friends and colleagues from Colorado, Pennsylvania, California, and of course, Michigan, whom I do not frequently have the opportunity to see.
Michigan Academy leaders took advantage of the opportunity to network and share a meal together. We also enjoyed a wonderful MAPA reception, which provided a fantastic way for Michigan PAs to gather in one place. Our current AAPA President, Folusho Ogunfidtimi, DM, MPH, PA-C, DFAAPA, graciously attended and visited with us for a short time. Additionally, many students who hope to return to Michigan after completing their PA education came to meet and network with Michigan PAs.
I had the great honor and privilege of presenting at AAPA this year. I participated in a mentoring program that paired experienced national presenters with first-time presenters, helping them prepare for the national stage. This program not only increased my comfort with presenting but also gave me the confidence to submit a presentation proposal for future conferences.
So, what does the AAPA national conference offer to PAs, aside from a five-day break from everyday life?
Here’s a summary:
- Over 50 hours of CME available, with multiple options each hour and various tracks
- PA Night Out—a chance to explore the city's nightlife
- Extensive networking opportunities
- Optional workshops
- An Expo featuring numerous exhibitors and a local marketplace
- Optional adventures (I had planned to book a ghost hunt but had to pass due to a lecture)
Overall, AAPA 2024 was a great success. I eagerly anticipate what AAPA 2025 in Denver will have in store—mountains, craft beer, and the opportunity to connect with Colorado PAs. I am confident that the CME offerings will be exceptional as always.
