Iron Mountain – Physician associates (PAs), hospital leaders, and members of the Michigan House will host a press conference on Tuesday morning to encourage lawmakers to support legislation that would improve access to healthcare across the state.

HB4309, sponsored by Rep. Dave Prestin, enacts the PA Licensure Compact (“PA Compact”) to create an interstate occupational licensure compact for PAs and improve healthcare access for patients. The compact provides a streamlined process via a compact privilege for PAs to practice in other compact member states without needing multiple licenses. Several states, including two of Michigan’s neighboring states, have joined the compact, as it supports the nation’s healthcare workforce by reducing the burden of maintaining multiple licenses.

In Michigan, more than 8,200 PAs stand ready to help address the state’s rising healthcare demands. The compact is one solution for enhancing access to care and provides several benefits for patients and PAs alike, including improved continuity of care and expanded employment opportunities.

PAs are highly trained and educated medical professionals who practice in every specialty and setting in the country. Michigan PA history dates back to 1973. Nationwide, PAs account for more than 514 million patient visits each year.
