What is PAMPAC?
MAPA has a PAC as well as all of the other health
care organizations in the State. MAPA’s PAC accepts
donations and then gives that money to help in the election of
legislators who are on important committees, and, or are
“friends” of PAs. Fortunately for us we have Mike
DeGrow, who is our Lobbyist, to help us get to know these legislators
and donate our money to get the best bang for our buck. Mike focuses on
legislators that have been supportive of MAPA in the past or that are on
the influential Health Committees in the State. When important issues
for PAs need to go through (or not go through) the legislature then we
truly need the support of key Senators or
Representatives.
So, does a PAC buy influence? No, not
really. If it did our organization would really be screwed since
(as you will see) most PAs don’t donate any money to the
PAC. A PAC allows an organization like ours to make a connection
with, or promote a legislator in their attempts to place themselves in a
decision making role (get or stay elected). A PAC allows our
lobbyist to promote our organization by donating money on our behalf. It
allows the lobbyist to attend fund-raisers and network with the
legislators in order to take the political pulse on issues and to
continue to mention the word PA to the decision makers.
It is so difficult to translate the importance of
strong PAC onto paper. It is one of the key components to the continued
success of our organization. It is a tool to help our lobbyist to be
successful. As practitioners it is difficult to translate the
importance of risk factors to patients but
We will never be the richest PAC but the reality is
that we have to be an effective PAC. Our ability to obtain donations
from PAs has been difficult. In the past we have found that fund-raisers
such as golf outings have been successful so we will try that again.
Donating to your PAC is an investment in your future. As you can
see, donating to PACs is important to the other Health Care
Organizations.

No, I did not leave out any numbers. We only
have $608 in our PAC. We cannot be effective when we are up
against numbers like this.
